#1 Be quiet
Phone calls, email, and text notifications are all parts of our lives. But these constant reminders of people and tasks that need our attention can lead to feelings of stress and anxiety. Take five minutes to enjoy peace and quiet. Switch everything off. You'll feel more upbeat, relaxed and less distracted.
#2 Do something different
It is important to switch off from one thing. To experience a different notion of time and space helps enormously, so take walks or simply get out to get some fresh air, look out of the window and watch children play, birds fly, clouds move. Let your mind rest, as well as your body.
#3 Make a playlist
One of the self-care rituals you should definitely partake is a creation of a playlist for keeping up your stamina throughout the chaos. So make sure you don’t forget your earphones to plug in and decompress with your favourite music. Let your guard off, dance and jump a bit!
#4 Make a happy list
It is always the right time to think about good things. You feel like everything sucks, you are tired and on the verge of giving up. Make a list of good things in your life within a three-minute time limit. Then spend 2 minutes appreciating these things. It gives a lot of reasons to be happy and helps your brain rewire for better.
#5 Tap it out
The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), or "tapping," is the practice of tapping your fingertips on pressure points on top of the head, nose, chin, and collarbone, around the eyebrows and eyes, under the arm, and on the wrists. Tap each point five-to-seven times to relieve symptoms of anxiety and promote general well-being.
#6 Write down your thoughts and feelings
If you are feeling stressed and overwhelmed, take some notes. Describe what exactly you are feeling, don’t find reasons or make judgements. Just get things down on paper and get back to it later when you have time and energy to really deal with it.
#7 Think of your goals
It is so easy to get lost in everyday routine. You start asking yourself: “Why am I doing it at all? I’ve been on my feet all day. I’m exhausted, I’m starving.” So it is important to go back to your goals, aims and dreams from time to time to see where you are actually going. When you know why you do certain things it is easier to cope with emotions, stress and disappointments on the way. So visualise your goal, your dream, your perfect day.
#8 Try meditation
Lie down on the floor. And listen to yourself: your thoughts, your body. Imagine you are a tiny blood cell travelling around your body. Explore yourself. Check out your head and face first, experience a touch of wind on your cheek. Move on down your neck to your back. Does it hurt? Your legs and your feet? Listen to your body, pay attention to its needs. Your muscular state relates to your emotions.
No chance to lie down? Sit or stand still in a quiet place, close your eyes and flow down your body.
Don’t want to lie, sit or stand still? Need some moves? Well, then try out on-the-move meditation. Pay attention to each step you take, let your arms swing naturally from relaxed shoulders, and notice every sound or colour or smell around you. Your mind will soothe, your body should relax, and you'll even get a little exercise.
#9 Laugh
Next time you need to calm down, pull up your favorite funny YouTube video or watch a few minutes of a comedy set, and allow your body to benefit from a good laugh.
Or even better - go through the pictures of your last trip or a weekend out with friends and family. Seeing smiley faces of people you love will not only make you happier but also inspire you to do your best.
#10 Grab a properly chosen snack
You might need a bit more than 5 minutes to learn about healthy eating. But 5 minutes are enough to have a snack that will actually do you some good.
Did you know that some fruit can help you feel better? Or that some smells cheer you up?
So next time you grab a snack, get a banana or have a cup of tea with honey to relax your body and mind. This simple food fights stress hormones and relaxes the nervous system.
If you have a sweet tooth go for a bar of dark chocolate, but make sure you choose bars with 70% or higher cocoa content.
And don’t forget to smell coconut - it definitely makes you feel good.
