The Beauty Industry in New York
At Online Makeup Academy, one of our exciting perks is the location of our physical location, in the heart of New York City. New York is the epicenter of the creative industry, and we are lucky to work with many top artists and talented industry professionals at our physical school (and bringing them to you directly online!), so we want to share with you more about the beauty industry in New York, NY!
Today, in the United States there are about 400 thousand salons of various kinds with an annual sales volume of $ 55-60 billion - this is just a small portion of the entire beauty industry!
Instead of statistics on salons - can we discuss the beauty industry in general? Freelance makeup artists, private clients, film, television, editorial, fashion especially; including companies such as Glamsquad (also founded in NYC) — which pertains more to our curriculum; salons are not something that freelance makeup artists can traditionally make as a career without an Esthetics or Cosmetology license.
In general, beauty salons and hairdressers have the largest market share: approximately 250 thousand operating salons throughout America and an annual sales revenue of around $20 billion. For a long time, small private salons dominated the industry; however, by the end of the 20th century, large chain stores began to grow, developing the opportunity for franchising. However, the beauty industry is still very fragmented: the 50 largest companies own only 15 percent of the market share! Just imagine that! That means there are so many growing (and succeeding) small business owners, like you!
For most salons the main target audience, of course, is women, but more and more beauty salons are trying to focus on families, thus attracting men and children as their clients. If you aspire to work in a salon, you will need to pursue your Cosmetology or Esthetics license (even though it has nothing to do with makeup artistry!). All 50 states, hairdressers, stylists and makeup artists are required to obtain permission and a license to work with clients. The process of obtaining a license, as a rule, includes attending a specialized school and passing written and practical exams. In addition, licensed individuals are required to undergo periodic training in order not to lose their license. If you aspire to work in a salon as a makeup artist, don't fear - we have many licensed Cosmetologists and Estheticians who continue (or begin) their education with us for their well rounded career in professional makeup artistry!
According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than 700,000 people work as hairdressers, stylists, and makeup artists. Employment in this area only continues to grow: according to preliminary forecasts. By 2020, growth is estimated to be 14 percent!
Many different international beauty industry conferences are held here. This is the largest and longest event in the world of beauty and fashion.
